SOMETHING TO PONDER OVER
from Revd Alistair Jessamine
‘… we win the victory … by means of our faith’
First John 5.4 Good News Bible
The recent Victory in Europe (VE) commemorations revealed, among other things, the incredible faith possessed by so many throughout the duration of the Second World War; the faith, for instance, of Prime Minister Winston Churchill … the faith of King George VI … the faith of the General Staff … the faith of combatants … the faith of civilians … that, despite the privations of war, the world’s fortunes could – and would – change for the better. And so they did.
And so it is today, as the nations of the world seek to attain the victory over an insidious global epidemic. I hope that each of us possesses the faith that such a victory can – and will – be won; and soon.
And in a Christian context, who would have thought that a first century victim of Roman crucifixion could ever have gained any kind of victory despite His ensuing death? But Christian faith maintains He did. And so, He says, will we; if only we each possess the faith to believe it.
Thine be the glory, risen, conquering Son,
endless is the victory thou o’er death hast won.
