Good Government

from Revd Alistair Jessamine

‘… the governing authorities …’
Romans 13.1 NRSV

Governments throughout the world vary from, in the main, the democratic governments of the western world to the more authoritarian governments of the east.

Which is best?

Democracies, despite their flaws, are better – provided they keep the lid on extreme right or left wing tendencies or groups which attempt to undermine civil stability and order; which is something every right-thinking person ought to be forever aware of … and wary of.

Who, for instance, would ever willingly wish to live in countries where governments and political leaders are above criticism on pain of suppression or persecution or worse?

Good government, in other words, can only come about – and persist – by virtue of the vigilance and good sense of the (truly) democratic electorate.
